Chateau Ramon Monbazillac
Monbazillac is an AOC appellation for sweet wines. In an area in the wider region of Bergerac, in south western France. The vineyard area lies on the southern bank of the Dordogne river. Which flows toward Bordeaux, surrounding the town of Monbazillac itself. Monbazillac wines are some of the most well-known sweet white wines in France, from Botrytis-affected Muscadelle, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
Chateau Ramon is family business that spreads along the clay and limestone soils of the southern hillsides of the Dordogne Valley.
- They make the fortified wine using grapes shrivelled by botrytis. This is known as `noble rot` which dehydrates the grapes, concentrating the sugars
- The harvesting of the grapes begins by a series of selective pickings. This requires the grape pickers to go through the rows 3 or 4 times. So they only pick the grapes when they are at the perfect level of botrytis
- The result is a sweet, golden wine with notes of candied orange, honey, saffron, pineapple, mango and dried apricots.
- Balanced by a zesty acidity leaving an elegant finish
Serve Chateau Ramon Monbazillac as an aperitif with foie gras or roquefort cheese or as an after dinner dessert wine.
