2002 Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port
Product Information
Quinta de Vargellas is pre-eminent among the wine estates of the Douro. Located in the wild and hilly eastern reaches of the Douro valley, it has been prized as a source of the finest Port wines since the 1820s. Today it ranks among the great vineyards of the world. A Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port is generally more early maturing than the declared Taylor’s Vintages.
Often quite approachable when young, they will nevertheless mature well for many years if laid down. The elegant and finely constituted wines of Vargellas are remarkable for their complex fruit, their distinctive scented quality and their well integrated sinewy tannins. Many experts believe Taylor’s Single Quinta Vintage Ports to be better than other companies’ declared years, the name Taylor’s is more of an assurance than the year.
Tasting Notes
Deep purple-black with narrow magenta rim. Shows some attractive bottle age on the nose. Mature fruit notes with spice. Good aromatic quality. Hint of violets. Warm plum and cherry jam on the mouth. Holds nicely. Smooth, satiny texture. A subtle, elegant wine.
How to Serve
Will mature well for many years although is currently showing well. Pair with blue cheese boards and walnuts.
Accolades
“There are raisins, prunes and molasses, eucalyptus and some peaty whiskey; the sweetness of brown sugar and candies peel...above all, there is concentration and a dense texture, with and elegant and deft complexity.” Tom Lewis, Cambridge Wine Blogger, March 2014
