Fonseca Guimaraens 1998 Vintage Port

Product Information

In the early 1950’s, the rising demand for Vintage ports led Fonseca Guimaraens to create a second vintage port under the ‘Guimaraens’ label. Blended from slightly less powerful components, Guimaraens Vintage Ports are made in years when the wines are more supple and early maturing.

They are drawn from the produce of the same three estates and differ only in that they are more approachable, ready to drink earlier and for their quality and rarity offer exceptional value. The 1998 growing season started extremely wet but with May came a burst of warmth and the summer was hot and dry with temperatures exceeding 40 º C. These almost perfect growing conditions caused great excitement in the Douro.

Tasting Notes

Dark purple, almost opaque with lovely, rich, full blackberry aromas and attractive floral and liquorice scents. This is a big, very rich and well rounded wine bursting with blackberry fruit. Medium to full bodied with a smooth, silky finish.

How to Serve

Decant and serve alone to savour the rich and complex flavours of the wine in a generously proportioned glass. Alternatively walnuts and blue cheeses would make an excellent match to this 98 vintage.

Accolades

“Deep and dense in hue and on the palate. This is a brooding Guimaraens, still a little sulky, with grippy tannins and youthful spirit which have yet fully to integrate. They give it an impression of (relative) dryness which I’m very sure it will shrug off with time given the tight knit cocoa-dusted dark berry/currant and sweeter raspberry fruit at its core. What I like best about it, especially on day 2 (when it’s looking a little more fluid/less tannin bound) is the freshness of the fruit. It provides a juiciness to the mid-palate before the grippy tannins assert themselves on a spicy, star anise-inflected finish. On day 2 it has unfurled just a little, revealing orange blossom and violet notes; the mid-palate is a little fleshier and juicier too. Promising definition and structure.” Sarah Ahmed, The Wine Detective, April 2015
