Product Information

Declared Vintages are the best vintage years which produce wines of great concentration and longevity. They are usually blended from the best produce of more than one estate. Croft’s declared Vintage Ports, although based on the wines of Quinta da Roêda, sometimes also contain wines from other top estates. In spite of a poor start, the growing season in 1994 was satisfactory, with dry warm weather broken only by a few short periods of rain.

In contrast to the preceding three years, there were no periods of very intense heat in the summer – the temperature never exceeded 38ºc – and this, combined with well-timed rainfall, has resulted in an evenly-ripened crop, producing musts rich in sugar, anthocyanins and aroma.

Tasting Notes

A vibrant ruby colour turning to brick on the rim. Intense, rich, jammy damson and black cherry fruit aromas. Good depth and complexity on the nose, with additional notes of spice and leather. Finely structured palate with great balance. Again, jammy notes on the palate giving way to deep chocolate flavours and hints of eucalyptus on the palate. Lovely length on the finish.

How to Serve

A very good match to cheese boards with Dulce de Membrillo (quince paste) and a fig and walnut slice.

Accolades

“96/100 Perhaps equal to the legendary 1945 vintage. Essence of raspberries and black fruit. Full body and medium-sweet, boasting loads of fruit and a chewy, tannic finish.” James Suckling, Wine Spectator, April 1998

"For the Port trade this [1994] was something of a watershed year, following on from the rather patchy 1985's and an interesting split declaration in 1991-92. By 1994 we were all in need of a serious vintage." Richard Mayson, March 2017
