Product Information

Established in 1792, Bodegas Hidalgo is one of the oldest Sherry producers in existence. Widely regarded as the definitive Manzanilla house. Continuity and quality have always been the most important themes for this family run company now in its eighth generation.

Produced using the traditional methods of the Denomination of Origin ‘Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda’. Vines are planted in Albariza soil in ‘Balbaina’ and ‘Miraflores’ in the Jerez Superior District. Produced from only free run juice and using only the natural yeast found on the grapes, fermentation is controlled tanks. The Wine is fortified to 15% ABV and is then matured in a ‘solera’ system, using American oak casks, under a veil of yeast or ‘flor’. It is only in Sanlúcar de Barrameda that flor can grow throughout the year, giving Manzanilla its unique light, dry style. Bottled under the original brand label ‘La Gitana’, one of Spain’s oldest wine brands. ‘En Rama’ signifies a Sherry that has been bottled almost directly from the barrel, without undergoing the usual processes to prepare a wine for bottling, such as filtering or fining. This makes the wine more intense and complex. The idea is to taste the Sherry almost as if you had visited the bodega in Spain and dipped your glass into the barrel.

Tasting Notes

A bracing expression of sherry with complex and aromatic savoury, nutty and salty characters on the nose leading to a fresh, tangy palate of hazelnuts, dried apple, citrus pith and a long finish.

How to Serve

An ideal accompaniment to tapas, olives, grilled sardines, mild cheeses, nuts and dried fruits.

"My pulse quickens at this time of year when La Gitana’s En Rama is shipped over to the UK for its annual, limited-release run.  This is the wild, revved up, mesmerising version of the everyday glugger, La Gitana Manzanilla, itself a stunning, bone dry wine.  Made from free run juice and using only natural yeasts for fermentation this is one of the most unique and otherworldly wines on the planet.  The term ‘En Rama’ means that this Sherry is unfiltered and unfined, so it is effectively like drinking it straight from the barrel.  You must track it down at all costs if you love dry Sherry." Matthew Jukes April 2017

"Brilliant gold in colour with marked expressive floral and dried fruit aromas on the nose. Balanced, complex and long on the palate"  Guía Peñín de los vinos de España

"A good, balanced palate, soft, dry and smooth with a ample, long finish." 97 points, Guia Proensa (Spain's Leading Wine Guide)
